620 miles from Miami located in the North Atlantic Ocean the Turks and relatively larger Caicos Islands are a popular vacationing location. They are British Overseas Territories as well. Turks and Caicos Islands have beaches so calm and pristine that you’ll spend most of your trip just relaxing on them.

The islands have the third largest barrier reef system in the world making it one of the best scuba diving spots worldwide. You’ll see a variety of sea creatures including but not limited to fish, lobsters, turtles, and sharks. You might even catch a glimpse of Jojo, a lone dolphin and national treasure of the islands, if you’re lucky. Snorkeling is also great if you want to go exploring on your own. Some popular places to snorkel are Smith’s Reef and Bight Reef in Princess Alexandra National Park. You can either bring your own snorkeling equipment or your resort might be able to provide them.

Another fun activity is to go stand up paddling or kayaking through the mangroves. This will give you the opportunity to come close to baby sharks and turtles as the mangroves acts as a nursery for these baby creatures.  If you really want to have your body surging with adrenaline you can go kite surfing at Long Bay. The wind at Turks and Caicos Islands makes for excellent kitesurfing sessions regardless of your skill level.

A conch cruise is one of the things that are unique to the Turks and Caicos Islands. You go on a cruise and get to snorkel along the reef then you can dive to get your own conch. Upon return they show you how to open your conch and prepare a fresh conch salad for you. If you want to hang out with some iguanas you can always visit Little Water Cay, also called Iguana Island, just be careful because they’re pretty good at blending in with their environment.

Horseback riding is such an amazing experience and even more so when done in the water. In Turks and Caicos Islands you can take your horse into the shallow waters. Another event that occurs every Thursday is the Local Fish Fry at the Bight Children’s Park as food vendors and entertainers create an authentic atmosphere for tourists and locals alike. If you’re clever then you might want to wait until later with the locals as the food gets cheaper. Perhaps not as famous as the Maldives but Turks and Caicos Islands is a beautiful tropical destination.
